The technique of measurement of intraocular lens surface roughness using Atomic Force Microscopy
Written by Malwina Lewandowska, Tomasz Stefaniuk, Jacek Pniewsk
Published: 24 October 2014
Abstract: Roughness of surface of Intraocular Lens plays an important role, which can provide important information on the interaction between the surface of the implanted lens and lens capsule, among others. Although surfaces appear smooth to the naked eye, they are quite rough at the microscopic levels. The paper presents a technique for measuring surface roughness using AFM. It was found that the size of the scan area does not significantly affect the two standards parameters describing the surface roughness profile (Sa and Sq), however, significantly affect the parameters describing the shape irregularities (Ssk and Ska).

Published: 21 October 2014
Abstract: In this work authors presented distribution of circumferential stress in wound composite structures made from different layers. The cylindrical shape specimens were made from layers which have different elastic moduli. Manufactured specimens underwent strength test to obtain distribution of circumferential stress as a function of radius. Circumferential strain on outside surface was measured by fiber optic strain gauge. In order to verify the experimental results were made microscopy specimens, obtained material properties by homogenization method and calculated the strain using analytical approach. In the end, authors compared results obtained from both methods.

Published: 17 October 2014
Abstract: Nowadays, the use of bisphosphonates are the gold standard of treatment of bone diseases. Due to the high utility of these compounds, scientists still search for better and better structures, with a variety of substituents at carbon’s atom and create new libraries or improve methods of their synthesis. To determine the potential effect of newly discovered bisphosphonates, for example antiosteoporotic activity, there are in vitro tests which allow to determine the half maximal inhibitory concentrations (IC50) of cells. This paper describes in detail the methodology for test the biological activity of bisphosphonates. Shows the results of biological activity for synthesized bisphosphonates in relation to the commercial-incadronate and zoledronate.

Published: 30 September 2014
Abstract: Rising requirements for a new constructions, force engineers to monitor them all day long. An attractive solution seems to be applications of wireless sensors. However, there is a barrier limiting their application, which is the need to supply them with an electrical power over extended period of time without using additional wiring or batteries. The potential solution of this problem seems to be an energy harvesting. This paper proposes a new energy harvesting device based on magnetostrictive material. In the course of the experiments with using Terfenol-D rods as actuators and sensors it has been shown, that the mechanical impact to the magnetic core based on Terfenol-D rod, NdFeB permanent magnets and coil set allowed to obtain an electric power signal enough to supply device of 100 Ohm load on their active state.

Measurement of the fixational eye movements based on observation of the eye pupil kinetics
Written by Marta Szmigiel
Published: 01 August 2014
Abstract: The paper presents measurement method of fast eye movement by use of the high-speed CCD camera, with recording rate 200fps. Sequences of the pupil’s images recorded within 10 seconds were next decomposed into frames and processed numerically. The position of the center of eye pupil were used to describe the eyeball movement during fixation. The calculated results allowed to achieve the goal of this paper, that is to characterize the fixational eye movement.

Magnetic core-shell structures as potential carriers in drug delivery system
Written by Katarzyna Łuszczyk
Published: 22 June 2014
Abstract: Magnetic core-shell structures have a high potential for promising application in biomedicine as drug carriers. In this paper, magnetic core-shell structure obtained by the sol-gel method was presented. In order to provide the protective coating of magnetic MnFe2O4 nanoparticles, amorphous silica was used. It has been shown that magnetic core was successfully encapsulated in SiO2 matrix and that the received core-shell material had magnetic properties.
